Why Train Our Emotional Intelligence

Emotions can be complicated. We all know this. Our lives testify to it when we blow up at a roommate, wake up anxious, or even struggle to be happy on our birthdays. Emotions determine a lot.

This is why we think it’s so important to train in emotional intelligence or EQ. What if along with hopping on the rowing machine at the gym we could train our EQ? The great news is: we can train our EQ.

What is EQ?

Emotional intelligence reflects our ability to navigate complicated feelings—both our own feelings and the feelings of those around us.

We all have that emotional baggage we carry. It almost seems to haunt us, and we find ourselves triggered sometimes as that emotional baggage unpacks in the present.

We also all have people in our lives who we find emotionally complicated. That’s because people are emotional. It’s human! Instead of pretending people should be different—instead let’s focus on what we can do about it and see how we can grow our EQ for navigating those relationships.

Expanding EQ is absolutely game-changing. It leads to greater wellbeing in our inner-worlds, and it makes us more effective professionally and more connected relationally.

For how important EQ is, it’s strange that we don’t intentionally train our emotional capacities.

We put years of our lives into our academic studies, professional skills, and athletic training. Why not put energy and effort into some of what matters most: our emotions?
